Video, Installation and Performance

Mass is an installation created by Gaika and Ben Cullen Williams, which investigates aspects of the physical and lived experiences of the built environment. Looking at the strained relationship between club culture, commercial developments and human body. Stemming from their own experiences of London club culture growing up, the work exists as part lived memory and part present reflection, having witnessed the demise of this landscape first hand. Created from scaffolding towers, sonically responsive strobe lights, speakers and a video created using a heat camera, the work is temporal and fragile. It itself becomes a site of exploration and archive. The work started as a single three-hour live performance which contained a recording of a conversation between Gaika and Oliver Wilson which was captured and played back through the same sculpture as an echo or memory; the strobe still flashing, the sound of the performance playing, the screens acting now as archival units rather than live visuals. A relic of its own making.
