Lagan, 2023

Video, Installation and Performance

Ben Cullen Williams and Gaika collaborate on Lagan. Through the insertion of a floating structure into the landscape, the installation disrupts and changes the natural world. Built through everyday materials seen in nightclubs and rafts, the sculpture floats on the water with two strobe lights that flash against the water below. Originally located in Sicily the work sits at the intersection between geographic hedonism and despair, environmental and human.

Set to a score, the lights and the sound are synced, having a direct and tangential relationship. The score is created from a generative sequencer, programmed using chord structures that are familiar yet distant. The work exists as a fragment, displaced and relocated, forming new atmospheres and relationships.
