Broad Gauge, 2020
Two-channel video
16mm transferred to digital
Broad Gauge is an 8 minute video work shot on 16mm film that explores the impact of transportation on the way that we understand space and time. The film starts in an abandoned railway station within India, suggesting allusions to the crumbled British Empire. Then as a new dawn, a train slowly pulls out and so begins a journey across the country on a range of different modes of transportation and environments. Technological fragments. Through this we become aware of the different speeds that distance is covered, compressing and expanding space. The film finally settles on the views of cityscapes and palaces, two different systems and symbols of living, historical and present. Sedentary moments at the end of a journey, two possible destinations, analogous to the journey of our own lives.
