A New Canopy, 2023
Video
A New Canopy uses a custom algorithm that is trained on satellite imagery of the Amazon rainforest to digitally generate new landscapes. Through using imagery of areas that contain large amounts of deforestation the video moves through areas of sparseness and abundance. The algorithm is aiming to understand the medium condition of the imagery it is shown, through this process, it creates and destroys, creating images that exist in a state of uncertainty. Through working with musician Harrison Cargill, Williams slowed down and altered sounds that Cargill made, aligning with the process of creation and destruction, or creation through destruction embedded in the video.
